Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have proven to be a powerful tool in conservation. To help us understand the movements of large mammals, GIS has been applied through both descriptive and prescriptive modeling. Descriptive modeling shows the pathways of current and historic migrations. Its power has increased with the advent of Global Positioning System (GPS) radio collars, for example, enabling the precise mapping of animal movements. Predictive modeling has been primarily used to help understand short distance movements and long distance migrations across different landscape types.
